Lesl Harker - Irish flute tutor
_ Lesl ("Less'l") Harker is one of the very few teaching undiluted old East Galway style, as a result of her long association with the late National Heritage Fellow Mike Rafferty of East Co. Galway.
What happens in a lesson: There are many angles and facets to learning traditional Irish music. We explore these as we go. You will learn a tune in small segments, bit by bit, until we can play the entire tune together. First I will play you a phrase and then we will play it together a few times. We continue until we get to the end of the tune. This is the easy traditional way to learn a tune. In a virtual online lesson, there is a time lag so we will only play small sections together slowly. Then we play together with your microphone temporarily muted (off). This way, the time lag doesn't affect us and you can play while hearing me play too. Then we discuss how it went! We address individual technique and questions and culture, learning about different players and the heritage of the music. You learn at your own pace. I will also record the tune slowly for you, to take home and use for practice. If you need notation for the tune, it is available but not necessary. You may surprise yourself with how quickly you will pick up the tune in this way, and the more you do it, the easier it gets. It's an easy skill! |
